Breast milk storage buying guide
Your breast milk is probably more precious to you than a lot of other things at this stage of breastfeeding. This makes you wonder how to store fresh milk that has just been drawn from your breasts. Note that breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator in breast milk storage containers. There are a few models that may confuse you. But, to make your choice easier, we've prepared this buying guide for you.
Expressing your milk: a few tips on pumping
Before you start to express your breast milk, check your breast pump (manual breast pump or electric breast pump) before using it. Look for any damaged or dirty parts that could contaminate your milk with microorganisms such as pathogenic bacteria.
After the milk has been pumped out and kept in a storage container, clearly mark the amount and the date and time for subsequent breastfeeding. You might consider using a permanent marker so that it doesn't come off if it gets wet.
Always clean the parts of your pump thoroughly by passing them through a sterilizer. Then allow to air dry before storage to avoid mold growth and the accumulation of infectious agents.
On most electric breast pumps, the tube itself should never get wet. It is too difficult to dry it again, which can lead to the growth of pathogens.
Some tips on freezing when storing breast milk
If you are not going to breastfeed your baby on freshly expressed milk, be sure to freeze it quickly to keep its nutritional qualities.
Try to freeze a quantity of milk between 50 to 100 ml. This way, you won't have to throw away any thawed milk your baby has not finished.
Leave a little air between the top of the container and the top of the milk when freezing to make room for expansion. And wait to tighten the cap or lid of the container until the milk has completely frozen.
Store milk in the back of the freezer, not on the door shelves. This will help to protect your milk any change in temperature.
Some advice on defrosting
Always use breast milk with the longest shelf life.
Simply thaw the milk overnight in your fridge, placing it in a fridge compartment where room temperature ensures a light refrigeration, but which at the same time allows to heat the milk. You don't have to warm it up unless it's your baby's preference.
If you are reheating the milk, be sure to keep the container closed during the process. Hold it under a stream of hot (not hot) water or place it in a bowl of lukewarm water.
Do not use your microwave, or even the bottle warmer, to heat milk. This could alter its nutritional qualities or bring it to a high temperature which could burn your baby.
Always test the temperature of the milk on your wrist before giving it to your little one. If it is hot, wait to feed it until it is comfortable and warm.
Do not shake the milk to mix the fat with the more watery part. Instead, gently swirl the milk to incorporate it.
What are the storage options for storing breast milk?
There are many choices for storing breast milk in your fridge and freezer. What you choose depends on your preferences and budget.
- Cooler bag and freezer bag
- Storage bottle
- Freezer trays
Bags of single use freezer are convenient because they can freeze flat and stack up to take up less space in your freezer. The good bags are made of quality materials, BPA free, pre-sterilized and leak resistant. You can also write any dates or other information directly on the bag.
Many options on the market allow you to express milk directly into the bag to eliminate the risk of contamination. A potential drawback of freezer bags is that they are more likely to be punctured.
If you have a little more space, bottle storage may be a good choice for you. The bottles are reusable if you are looking to produce less waste. To do this, you just need to sterilize them.
You can even express the milk straight into the bottle, store it in the fridge or freezer, then warm it up to give it to your baby in a bottle. The bottles can also go in your dishwasher for easy cleaning.
If you opt for bottles, consider getting reusable labels to clearly write the date your milk was expressed.
You can use freezer trays similar to ice cube trays to store smaller amounts of breast milk. Simply pour your milk into the tray and freeze it. Take out the cubes when you need to thaw the milk.
However, do not use just any tray. Instead, look for models made from silicone or other food-grade BPA-free material. The trays should also have lids to protect the milk from cold burns.
